GOTS – The Organic Content Standard
GOTS is a global organic standard for textiles and clothing that requires at least 95% of all raw materials to be certified as organic. This includes cotton, wool, jute, silk and linen, as well as the processing of these materials in factories and plants. In addition, the production of organic fibres must comply with the IFOAM Family of Standards for the relevant scope of production. The GOTS certification also requires that the fabric is sewn or knitted in facilities which are either certified to GOTS or have received an equivalent third party accreditation. This means that the manufacturing process of a GOTS product is fully traceable and transparent, and that the organic content of the final product can be verified.
The GOTS label also supports farmers and producers who are working towards organic certification by allowing them to sell their products with the ‘organic in conversion’ mark, which is valid for three years. This allows them to make organic sales while still converting land to organic and providing stability for their families.
All GOTS-certified facilities must meet certain key social criteria based on International Labour Organisation conventions, such as no forced or child labour, safe and hygienic working conditions, and fair wages for workers. They are also required to maintain detailed quality assurance and control records of the organic raw materials used in their products.
In addition to certifying fabrics and clothing made with organic materials, the GOTS programme is helping to drive positive change in agriculture. The GOTS standard promotes ecological, economic and social sustainability, and provides a better livelihood for farmers and cotton workers around the world. It encourages farmers to invest in organic farming methods, and ensures that chemicals are not used during the growing and harvesting of cotton and other crops.

GOTS – The Global Organic Textile Standard
GOTS is the world’s leading organic textile certification. It not only ensures that cotton is organic but also that the production of that cotton is ethical and fair for everybody involved. GOTS sets strict rules for working conditions in factories, requiring that chemicals are kept to an absolute minimum and that any additional materials such as fabric trims and accessories, sewing threads, machine oil and even the packaging used can’t contain any toxic substances. The requirements are monitored by independent and accredited organisations.
The GOTS standards were first developed in 2002 by four organizations: The Organic Trade Association (OTA, USA), Internationaler Verband der Naturtextilwirtschaft (IVN, Germany), The Soil Association (UK) and Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA, Japan). This group of organisations represents a wide range of industries and interests within the textile industry and organic food sector. The four groups aimed to fill a gap in the market for globally recognized organic processing standards and to harmonise these into a single standard that is accepted worldwide.
To be GOTS certified, every entity along the supply chain of cotton or linen must pass the GOTS audits and inspections. These start at the fields and continue through all post-farm processing stages such as ginning, ripping and sizing, wet processing, spinning, weaving and knitting and finishing. The GOTS criteria requires that all chemicals used in the wet processing are certified organic, that energy and water usage is assessed and recorded and that all wastewater is treated before discharge. In addition to these ecological criteria, GOTS has social safety measures that are based on the core norms of the International Labour Organisation and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Amongst other things, GOTS prohibits the use of aromatic solvents and dyes containing carcinogenic compounds, chlorine bleach, toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde and GMO’s. It also requires that all wet processing equipment vente en gros fournisseurs de vêtements écologiques be free from toxins and that any fabric softeners used are GOTS approved.
In addition to these environmental and social criteria, GOTS has stringent technical requirements that are evaluated by an independent and accredited GOTS certifier. This includes ensuring that the GOTS label grade is correct (‘Organic’ or ‘Made with X% Organic’) and that the product contains at least 95% certified organic cotton. Clothing labelled ‘Made with X% organic’ can include up to 10% synthetic fibers for elasticity, moisture-wicking and other technical purposes.
